How The Caves Shard Works
Don't Starve Together splits a world into shards. The master shard hosts the Forest, and the caves run as a second shard that joins the same cluster, sharing your cluster.ini and your Klei cluster token. Both shards live on your server, each using one of your allocations, which is why unmetered ports with 10 available by default matters more here than in most games.
Because the caves simulate a world of their own, plan for more memory than a surface-only server would use. A 3 GB plan covers a small Forest-only camp, while 6 GB gives a caves-enabled cluster with a mod list room to breathe through a full year of seasons.
