Spy vs. Spyware

Nowadays with all the things floating around the internet, viruses are the least of your worries.  Spyware is actually recording what you type and what you look at and sending it to a third party.  Usually it is just for advertising purposes, but sometimes it is for something much more sinister.  Getting rid of it is not too difficult, but you must be diligent in checking for it regularly.

To eliminate spyware, you first need to get anti-spyware software.  It can be purchased at a computer store, or downloaded from the internet.  If you decide to go for the download, make sure you are getting the software from a reputable company; you want to fix the problem, not make it worse.

Before running anything, make sure your most important files are backed up somewhere other than your hard drive.  CDs are great for this, or you can use an external hard drive.  This needs to be done because sometimes you might lose data in the process, and having that extra copy could come in handy.

Always get the updates to your anti-spyware.  The people that program these things are constantly looking for new ways to hack into your system and if your system is out of date, it might not detect things that are infecting your computer.  New versions are available every month or so, and can be downloaded from the company that made the original software. High-end laptops and desktop computers often come with a year’s subscription to an anti-spyware and anti-adware service, budget laptops and netbooks may not.

Sometimes if you know when you were infected, you can restore your computer’s setting to a date prior to the infestation.  Though this will eliminate the problem, remember that anything you downloaded after the restore date will be lost.  Again, anything important should be backed up first.

If you keep checking for these programs regularly, eliminating spyware should be easy.  Remember, more and more we are keeping valuable information on our hard drives.  It is important that we keep this data out of others hands.
