DLGuard Review – Shopping Cart Software For Protecting Download Sales
This DLGuard review provides some insight into how this tool automates online sales from your own web server and, importantly, how it is able to secure download links from being shared.
Back in 2008 I had started writing ebooks and plug-in software and needed a way to sell them from my site. A colleague recommended DLGuard as a reliable sales tool that specialized in download sales management.
After the quick installation on my server and setting up some PDF files in the product inventory (basically the list of files you wish to make available to download) it was simply a case of adding links to the shopping cart on my web pages.
The shopping cart & checkout process has all the standard features you could want. This includes handling a basket of products, supporting promotional money-off coupons at checkout and being able to run payments through Paypal, PayDotCom and all the other payment handlers.
DLGuard automatically sends out the confirmation email to customers with their download link after payment is made. This stage is crucial as there is always the danger of the link being used by more than one person. DLGuard secures it by allowing you configure the number of times the link can be used and also set a limit on how long the link stays live before it is deactivated. This stops all misuse of the hyperlink dead in its tracks.
One constraint in the product is that the license specifies it can only be used on a maximum of two servers. To use it on three or more domains you would need to purchase extra licenses. Alternatively you could have one server for processing sales/shopping cart actions which all your domains would use. The only set back of this though would be that the shopping cart branding could not change depending on which website the sale had originated from.
For webmasters who want a secure, stable & automated way of making download/membership sales then DLGuard provides some great value and features. If on the other hand your website experiences low traffic then it would be more prudent to sell your products via the larger online services to avail of their traffic.
