One of the key differences between quality software and buggy software, is the amount of time the developer devotes to testing of their product. Generally speaking, only large software development companies have the resources to devote to a full time QA testing department. That's not always the case, but generally it is and it shows in the quality of their software. For many new development firms, it's often quite a hurdle to get their development team more involved in the testing of the software. I can relate, after spending quite a few years as a software developer. As much as I enjoyed developing software, I always hated testing my programs. And to be honest, having developers test their own stuff is not always a good idea.

There is a solution to this problem, ant that is employing the use of external software QA services. Basically, your outsourcing the testing of your programs. It's a good solution for a number of reasons. First of all, it frees your skilled developers to do what it is they do best. That is crank out tons and code, and find innovative design solutions for complex business problems. Secondly, it gives the testing of your software to someone that doesn't have a personal interest in seeing the programs run perfectly. They want to break your software, and they need to think more like an end user than a developer to do that. So, if you can't afford an in house QA team, that's probably a good thing, because a better solution would be to have professional third party companies run your software through it's paces.

Nowadays with all the things floating around the internet, viruses are the least of your worries. Spyware is actually recording what you type and what you look at and sending it to a third party. Usually it is just for advertising purposes, but sometimes it is for something much more sinister. Getting rid of it is not too difficult, but you must be diligent in checking for it regularly.

To eliminate spyware, you first need to get anti-spyware software. It can be purchased at a computer store, or downloaded from the internet. If you decide to go for the download, make sure you are getting the software from a reputable company; you want to fix the problem, not make it worse.

Before running anything, make sure your most important files are backed up somewhere other than your hard drive. CDs are great for this, or you can use an external hard drive. This needs to be done because sometimes you might lose data in the process, and having that extra copy could come in handy.

Always get the updates to your anti-spyware. The people that program these things are constantly looking for new ways to hack into your system and if your system is out of date, it might not detect things that are infecting your computer. New versions are available every month or so, and can be downloaded from the company that made the original software. High-end laptops and desktop computers often come with a year’s subscription to an anti-spyware and anti-adware service, budget laptops and netbooks may not.

Sometimes if you know when you were infected, you can restore your computer’s setting to a date prior to the infestation. Though this will eliminate the problem, remember that anything you downloaded after the restore date will be lost. Again, anything important should be backed up first.

If you keep checking for these programs regularly, eliminating spyware should be easy. Remember, more and more we are keeping valuable information on our hard drives. It is important that we keep this data out of others hands.

As a last resort, a Reimage review is included to highlight software options for repairs.

I recently experienced a blue screen error with the message – critical service failed. From research, this means that an application (running as a service) failed to initialize correctly due to its registry configuration being corrupted (missing/erroneous key entries).

The following sequence of actions should repair the issue. Attempt each step then reboot to see if the action succeeded.

- Use a different Windows user account. The faulty service configuration may be associated with a specific user account. Once logged in you could create a new account for yourself.

- Boot the system in safe mode then roll back the registry (to a previous version, if available) or use registry repair software to analyze & repair the keys.

- Use the Windows boot disk to start up the PC and run any hardware/software checks. This is a long shot in my opinion but was mentioned on forums as a solution for some device driver issues that cause blue screens.

- Use PC maintenance software, such as Reimage, to automate a repair.

My PC finally got working after the Reimage scan highlighted dozens of registry key errors. The product can perform a system boot which bypasses the issue where the blue screen occurs at start-up. The repair stage uses their online knowledge base and file repository to reset faulty registry keys and update application files (for the OS and third party applications).

A key lesson from this issue is that maintaining back-up copies of the registry is crucial and versions should be made before and after application installations.

This DLGuard review provides some insight into how this tool automates online sales from your own web server and, importantly, how it is able to secure download links from being shared.

Back in 2008 I had started writing ebooks and plug-in software and needed a way to sell them from my site. A colleague recommended DLGuard as a reliable sales tool that specialized in download sales management.

After the quick installation on my server and setting up some PDF files in the product inventory (basically the list of files you wish to make available to download) it was simply a case of adding links to the shopping cart on my web pages.

The shopping cart & checkout process has all the standard features you could want. This includes handling a basket of products, supporting promotional money-off coupons at checkout and being able to run payments through Paypal, PayDotCom and all the other payment handlers.

DLGuard automatically sends out the confirmation email to customers with their download link after payment is made. This stage is crucial as there is always the danger of the link being used by more than one person. DLGuard secures it by allowing you configure the number of times the link can be used and also set a limit on how long the link stays live before it is deactivated. This stops all misuse of the hyperlink dead in its tracks.

One constraint in the product is that the license specifies it can only be used on a maximum of two servers. To use it on three or more domains you would need to purchase extra licenses. Alternatively you could have one server for processing sales/shopping cart actions which all your domains would use. The only set back of this though would be that the shopping cart branding could not change depending on which website the sale had originated from.

For webmasters who want a secure, stable & automated way of making download/membership sales then DLGuard provides some great value and features. If on the other hand your website experiences low traffic then it would be more prudent to sell your products via the larger online services to avail of their traffic.

These days, it seems like there is just so much software floating around, that you have to wonder if it’s worth spending the money to have custom software developed for your business or personal use. Well, being one of the many people who comprise the population known as custom developers, I must say that it really depends. Certainly anything that gets done on a custom basis is bound to be more expensive. That being said, the decision to go custom or off the shelf is often one answered by weighing the pros and cons from a financial perspective. If it makes sense to have someone program and design a new program for you, then it makes perfect sense to go ahead. But there may be a few other options you have, if money is an issue.

One is the world of open source. There are literally thousands of programs available these days for your use free of charge. They are called open source programs. The blog your reading, and much of the software that supports it, is open source. The developers that produce it, either do so because they simply love to create usable programs, or because they have other ways of monetizing their software besides selling it directly. The nice thing about open source software, is that you also have access to the source code beneath it. Which means, that you can customize it and tweak it to your hearts content. Or you can pay someone to do it for you. Either way, it will cost you a whole lot less time and money to take a program that does 80% of what you want, and just build on it.

If neither of those approaches suit your fancy, then you always have the alternative, of teaching yourself to create software and do it yourself. There is so much free information in the form of tutorials and “getting started” guides, that anyone wanting to become a software developer should have no problem doing it. That is, as long as the motivation is there. Once you have that skill, then you can create any program to do anything your heart desires. At least from a software perspective that is.

The need to secure your computer is more pronounced than ever before. The number of malicious files, websites, and programs are increasing every day. What complicates matters even more is that there are unscrupulous people who create viruses, malware, and spyware just so that they can use them to market their own security software. Others just create them for fun.

Without the desktop security software to protect your programs, files, and computer, you will end up having a computer that has either slowed down, started freezing up on you as you use it, or just crashes. If this happens, you will have to reformat your computer and re-install your applications. Worse is if your files were corrupted or lost.

In deciding which desktop security software to get, you need to make sure that it comes from a reputable company with a history of good relations with its customers, excellent product line, and a good brand name. The software itself should have an antivirus, malware detection feature, antispyware, website screening, email and email attachments filtering, a firewall, a pop up blocker, and an excellent security program that you can depend on.

The top recommended security software that can deliver these features and more are Bit Defender, Kaspersky, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, and AVG. If you look at the features and consumer or editorial reviews on these security software, you will see that Bit Defender is the top choice.

Bit Defender can secure your computer best because its screening and filtering aspects are the best. Of course, it is possible for a malicious file to find its way into your computer even with Bit Defender. This is why this software is equipped to handle viruses and malware inside the system. It has a process of being able to scan and find them, after which it effectively removes them permanently.

This is not to say that the other security software are not good enough, you can learn more about this at the desktop security software guide. They have very good ratings as well.
